If you’re a follower of MMO circles, you’ll know there’s a new ‘WoW Killer’ name that’s been constantly popping up in recent months.
‘WoW Killer’ – while flattering, it’s a title that’s usually the death knell for many MMO’s. People start looking at them far too critically, taking every minor niggle and blowing it all out of proportion, “because it will have to be flawless to take on the giant” – bollocks!
That name, to derail my little rant, is Aion: Tower of Eternity. You see the game has actually been out for several months – but only in Korea & China. Coming close to its release here in Europe and North America, I managed to finally sneak my way into the latest round of closed beta so I can give you my opinion. A proper opinion, not one overshadowed by ‘WoW’ comparisons.
You start the game as one of these races, as a gifted but still very much human player. As you progress through the early levels you are shown glimpses of your gifted nature, eventually ascending beyond mere human and becoming an immortal Daeva, gaining yourself some wings in the process. The race you choose dictates how your wings will look, with the Elyos getting nice white angelic wings, and the Asmodian getting a massive, black, demonic looking pair.
The Elyos – who are the ‘pretty boys’ of the game – got the sun soaked, fertile part of the world when Atreia was split. This beautiful half is known as Elysea, and has allowed the Elyos to prosper and advance without much effort, particularly in the capital city of Sanctum. Due to the laid-back lack of struggle, they have grown arrogant and perceive the Asmodians as twisted, cursed creatures.
Conversely, the Asmodian are what you would refer to as ‘a bit rough’. They basically got screwed by the cataclysm as their half of the world, which is known as Asmodae, was plunged into dark and cold times. Only the most hardy survived. Those that did survive have thrived and prospered in the face of the adversity, developing a generous and loyal nature to each other as a result. Their capital city is known as Pandaemonium…
