Review – Ascendancy

Monday, February 28th, 2011

ascendancy-promo-art-comp1b As much as everyone loves firing birds from slingshots or making frogs bounce from cloud to cloud, sometimes you just have a craving for something a little more in depth and traditional.

Nothing could scratch that itch better than the classic empire building strategy genre, known as the 4X genre.

For those who are not familiar with that category, 4X is short for ‘explore, expand, exterminate, and exploit’ and while those core features appear in many strategy games, the 4X games generally max out the complexity & detail. These games saw a surge of popularity in the mid 90’s, with games like Master of Orion & Space Empires proving popular. One other title that came out during this time was Ascendancy, which was one of the better games to come out during that boom.

I’m hoping with these overviews you can get a feel for what the class is and how it plays, helping you judge what you might want to play next.

Spectrum Technology And You; An Insight Into The Astronomer

Monday, February 28th, 2011

astronomer_portrait_border_128 Learning a new set of Bloodlines each week can be a daunting task, but that’s where I step in.

I am going to aim to delve into the deeper side of each individual Bloodline as they rotate out, explaining the ins and outs, and to give you all a better understanding of each class.

Bloodline Champions uses a system of 4 main Archetypes; Healer, Melee, Tank and Ranged and within these are the Bloodlines. For the free-to-play each week there are 4 Bloodlines available to play, 1 from each archetype.

We kick off this week with the first of our 4 archetypes: the Healer. And the Bloodline we’re given is going to be the Astronomer, possibly one of my favourite of the healers, as his blend of strong melee attacks and powerful heals make him a healer you don’t want to mess with.

Friday, February 25th, 2011

magicka If you like your games a bit different, a bit bloody, very funny and with lots of ways of killing waves and waves of enemies….Magicka is for you.

Magicka is a satirical action-adventure game set in a fantasy world based around Norse mythology. You take on the role of a wizard, who has set out on an adventure to stop an evil sorcerer and the hordes of minions/creatures he has at his disposal.

Magicka’s core gameplay comes in the form of – surprise surprise – the spells you cast. There are 8 different elements you can combine to create your spell, selected by eight different keys; Q,W,E,R,A,S,D, and F; with right-click used to cast.
