Review – A New Beginning

Monday, June 13th, 2011

While classic adventure titles like Monkey Island and Sam & Max are getting the 3D rendering treatment in that new-school episodic format that all the kids are into these days, it’s refreshing to see a game harken back to the artistic 2D visuals that used to be the staple of point-and-clicks. But Daedalic’s latest release, A New Beginning, does much more than just sit there looking pretty. If you don’t mind the environmental message that it drills into you, A New Beginning is a joy to play, from its graphic novel aesthetics to its well-executed plot and its deep characterisation. If there’s an adventure game you’re going to play this year, make it this one.

Daedalic Entertainment are clearly concerned about the environment; if Al Gore had made an adventure game, well, this wouldn’t be it because he’s a politician and knows diddly squat about making games, but it’d be similar! Billed as an ‘eco-thriller’, a phrase that conjures up images of trees toting machine guns, A New Beginning tells the story of a dying Earth far in the future. Our blue planet has been ravaged by climate change, making the air unbreathable and the land pretty much uninhabitable.

Even worse is that a band of surviving scientists have discovered the world will be slapped around by a solar flare in two weeks time, destroying everything. Not being fans of a slow and painful death, the hardy bunch of individuals decide to send a select few back in time to sort the environment out before this can happen – opening up another splendid time paradox that the media seems to love.
