Rage requires an 8GB PS3 Install, Uses 3 Discs on X-Box 360

images You ready to play id Software’s latest and greatest shooter, Rage?  Well hold on there, because the game won’t be playable when you pull it out of the shrinkwrap on the PlayStation 3 version.

id Software creative director Tim Willits confirmed to Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry that the PS3 version has a mandatory 8 GB install.

“Yes, that’s absolutely true,” said Willits when asked about the mandatory install. “Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don’t allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it’s just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it’s all the same. Some of the other systems you have… should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it’s very nice.”

By contrast, the 360 version of Rage comes on three discs, and there’s an option for installing, but it’s not mandatory for play.  But when it’s all said and done, the 360 install will total 22 GB.

One of the discs contains the multiplayer component of the title, with Willits noting that players “don’t really need to install the multiplayer disc if you’re really tight on hard disk space.”

“Three discs. We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don’t need to install all three discs. If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two,” he said.
