IO Interactive moving on to new IP after Hitman: Absolution

ws_hitman-_absolution_2560x1600 IO Interactive studio head, Niels Sorensen, has said the part of the studio will be moving on to a new IP after it has wrapped up work on Hitman: Absolution.

Earlier this month IO’s parent company, Square Enix, revealed it is to open a second studio called Square Enix Montreal, in 2012.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Sorensen said part of IO will assist the newly created studio in its first project, “a new premium quality game” in the Hitman franchise, while the remaining staff will move on to developing a new property.

“When people work on the same IP for some time, I believe that there’s a sort of creative drain,” he said, explaining the division, “Thankfully we managed to make sure we keep focusing on different IPs and keeping people fresh.”

Although he didn’t provide any additional details on what the new IP may be, he did say it is the product of an in-house brain trust set up specifically to think up new properties.

“We’ve built an incubation department whose focus is work on new IP and prototypes, and all sorts of things for existing and new IP.”

“And that’s a really interesting sort of secret place where they cook up a lot of new things.”
