Review – The Witcher: Versus

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

witchervs_iphone_appstore_01 Hand to hand combat has never felt so hands off.

The Witcher: Versus is a new kind of experience for me – a game focused on combat that relies mostly on human psychology and chance.

Combat takes place in a turn-based system with each player queuing up their defensive and attacking tactics and clicking play. Once combat starts your input stops – kind of like rock, paper, scissors, but with sorceress’ and a cash shop.

The game starts well with a great introduction to the systems and the combat through the use of a few simple tutorials and a handy help section. Even without these little introductory pieces, the gameplay is so simple it wouldn’t take long for you to pick it up and start playing.

Review – SteelSeries 5XB Spectrum Headset

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

steelseries-5xb Whether you’re listening out for the blood curdling shrieks of your enemies as you bludgeon them with a herring, or taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling virtual metropolis that surrounds you, audio is king.

Great sound production can create immersion the likes of which no amount of graphical polish could ever produce, and only a decent sound system can offer you the best experience.

SteelSeries have come to the rescue with their 5XB Spectrum, a headset offering on the fly balance adjustment between voice and game, a retractable mic, and a wonderfully lightweight design targeted solely at Xbox 360 gamers.

First impressions are positive; the headset is crafted beautifully in black gloss plastic with lime green trim, screaming X360 fanboi from the off. The fit and feel is that of a well designed product, but the weight of the headset will leave you in two minds. The light-weight construction makes for comfortable gaming sessions into the very early hours of the morning, but the gloss plastic combined with this incredibly light structure leaves a niggling doubt about the build quality.

Singularity (Review)

Thursday, July 29th, 2010
timewave_003

Activision’s latest fps hit, Singularity, has been a highly anticipated release since its announcement. It’s instantly very clear that they’ve taken a large step, rather, a leap away from the realism of the Call of Duty titles in this time-travelling, Ruski-shooter.

The convoluted and, at times, disturbing plot is far from simple; in brief, you play as Nathan Renko, a captain in the US Army, sent to a secret Russian Island, where the Soviets have been experimenting, for what of a better word, in time-travel. Of course, when you arrive at the island, the game immediately begins to seep with predictability; you get split up from your partner, you get ambushed several times by admittedly creepy mutants, you find your partner, he gets killed by an angry Russian, and you get saved by a female rebel, who believes that you are the saviour of mankind. Drawing any parallels yet? (more…)

Guitar Hero Gets Custom Tracks

Guitar Hero - Lars

The must-have, quintessential rock music collection keeps getting better as Activision announces two exclusive re-records and a host of new shredable tracks for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

Singers, songwriters and rock legends Alice Cooper and The Runaways went back into the studio to re-record “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “Cherry Bomb,” respectively, for fans to rock out to when the game releases this September.

“I AM a Warrior of Rock! Younger fans getting exposed to true classic rock songs is one of my personal crusades,” said Alice Cooper. “The new audience listening to the classic songs of today, like “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” will hopefully be inspired to write the classic songs of tomorrow.” (more…)

No To Digital Distribution

Monday, July 26th, 2010

digital-distribution No doubt the the title will cause controversy, but it has to be said. Digital distribution is a great thing, but when retail stores (the latest being HMV) jump on the band wagon, we’re just going to end up with a complete mess of an industry.

HMV have jumped on the digital distribution bandwagon vowing to offer their own in-house digital distribution. This is a retail store embracing technology, something which I applaud them for, but I can’t help but feel a little cynical about the way they’re going about it.

Currently there are a lot of digital content providers around, the most prominent of which, is the Steam platform. Steam is successful for a reason, it was the first to the game, it offers constant updates, a catalogue of games bigger than any retail store and some great social features. It’s evolved from a digital store into an entire platform offering its own social aspects, DRM and anti-cheat methods. Quite frankly, it’s refined, it’s well thought out, and it keeps all of your games safe (presuming of course that they don’t go bust).

The last thing we need now is another digital provider. I’m all for competition, but to compete with Steam you’re going to have to have one hell of a product with a truly fantastic back catalogue. Currently, I don’t see anyone offering anything close. The multitude of digital providers popping up doesn’t seem like a bad idea, but when you consider that big business can mean exclusive titles, we’re going to end up with our game collections spread across the internet like a double rainbow. What does it mean? (sorry for the crap reference) It means that ultimately we’re going to end up with lots of different platform software to play a game, we’re going to end up with games all over the web, we may forget where we bought our games and they’re lost forever.

Worst still, if more and more companies jump on the bandwagon, there won’t be room in the market and some of them may go bust. What happens when the provider goes bust? Bye bye games!

I’m not all against digital distribution, I prefer having a disc, it means my retro stuff will always be with me on and offline, and I like that. But I also have an ever-expanding collection of games on Steam, and I love that too. I just despise people jumping on bandwagons with little to no enthusiasm or imagination, creating just another generic service. HMV, please don’t fall into that trap!
