Review – A New Beginning

Monday, June 13th, 2011

While classic adventure titles like Monkey Island and Sam & Max are getting the 3D rendering treatment in that new-school episodic format that all the kids are into these days, it’s refreshing to see a game harken back to the artistic 2D visuals that used to be the staple of point-and-clicks. But Daedalic’s latest release, A New Beginning, does much more than just sit there looking pretty. If you don’t mind the environmental message that it drills into you, A New Beginning is a joy to play, from its graphic novel aesthetics to its well-executed plot and its deep characterisation. If there’s an adventure game you’re going to play this year, make it this one.

Daedalic Entertainment are clearly concerned about the environment; if Al Gore had made an adventure game, well, this wouldn’t be it because he’s a politician and knows diddly squat about making games, but it’d be similar! Billed as an ‘eco-thriller’, a phrase that conjures up images of trees toting machine guns, A New Beginning tells the story of a dying Earth far in the future. Our blue planet has been ravaged by climate change, making the air unbreathable and the land pretty much uninhabitable.

Even worse is that a band of surviving scientists have discovered the world will be slapped around by a solar flare in two weeks time, destroying everything. Not being fans of a slow and painful death, the hardy bunch of individuals decide to send a select few back in time to sort the environment out before this can happen – opening up another splendid time paradox that the media seems to love.

Breaking In To The Industry

Monday, June 13th, 2011

In this column, we’ve heard a lot of advice from various fields, including: programming, art, and design. We tend to think of these roles as the core of video game development.

At the end of the day, though, there is a group of people who ensure that the work gets done. These guys and gals work tirelessly to make sure the studio has the resources it needs to deliver games on time. They fall under a category called Operations Management.

No one knows the guts of operations better than Karen Clark. Her current role as Director of Studio Operations at Loot Drop Inc., a start-up social gaming company, gives her broad insight on what it takes to fill this understated, but always needed, role.

Allods Online Q&A

Monday, June 13th, 2011

The full release of Allods Online is a pretty big deal in the free-to-play MMO market, so when the opportunity to talk to Allods Executive Producer, Vincent Douvier, came along, we jumped at the opportunity quicker than an Astral ship travelling at light-speed (that’s pretty quick, if you didn’t know..)

First of all – great to see Allods finally fully launched! How relieved are you guys to have the game out there without the “beta” tag?

Yes indeed, we went live on the 11.5.11 after 1 year of Open Beta. It took a year to make sure there would not be any more major changes in the game, and to get to stage where we’re only polishing the last few corners of the game. Great games mean great testing and that can take a bit of time, but it was all very worth it. Just browse any forum about Allods and you’ll see that all the players are very happy.

But as for being relieved, well, that’s a very rare feeling in the MMO industry. Every new update is not just a milestone for the teams, but for players also. The work never stops.

Project Zomboid – First Play

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Is this THE definitive zombie game? It’s close..

Truth be told, we’ve always fancied ourselves in the zombie apocalypse; and why not? If games and movies have taught us anything, zombies are nothing more than cannon fodder awaiting our gun-toting fun times. A shotgun shell here, a slightly faster walk there – a spot of undead dodging is the kind of breezey lifestyle us work-a-phobes could get used too.

So imagine our surprise when a 2D isometric indie game came along and told us we’d actually die in a matter of hours. Not because of a zombie bite, or some big overpowered boss running faster than we can. No. Apparently we’ll die because of something stupid like forgetting to barricade all the windows, leaving the soup in the oven until it catches fire, or failing to listen carefully to a mad man waving a shotgun in our face.

It’s the human drama that made Romero’s “of the Dead” series so successful, questioning the trust you place in yourself and your fellow man when times are at their most desperate. That’s the fear you have to contend with in Indie Stone’s major debut title, and that’s why, even though it’s still only a pre-alpha tech demo, we’re already in love with Project Zomboid.
