Review – Magicka

Friday, February 25th, 2011

magicka If you like your games a bit different, a bit bloody, very funny and with lots of ways of killing waves and waves of enemies….Magicka is for you.

Magicka is a satirical action-adventure game set in a fantasy world based around Norse mythology. You take on the role of a wizard, who has set out on an adventure to stop an evil sorcerer and the hordes of minions/creatures he has at his disposal.

Magicka’s core gameplay comes in the form of – surprise surprise – the spells you cast. There are 8 different elements you can combine to create your spell, selected by eight different keys; Q,W,E,R,A,S,D, and F; with right-click used to cast.

A Decade of Diablo II

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

From the depths of hell the sounds of celebration and merriment are to be heard today. Not because another group of adventurers has vanquished the Lord of Destruction but because today the game celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Released on June 29th 2000, Diablo II instantly became a firm favourite of many RPG fanatic like myself. Its unending Demon slaughter combined with classic RPG design ideal, built on top of the well-built world of the first title, it would have been hard for it to fail.

Yet undoubtedly nobody, not even Blizzard themselves, could have expected that players would still be logging on to their Battle.net service for the game on a daily basis. The game also still receives update patches & regularly makes its way back into the PC games sales charts.

I personally have lost count about of the number of times I’ve reinstalled the game, compelled to play through it all again with a different class or build.

So let us raise a flagon of our best brew to Diablo, his Minions & all the great adventures we’ve had over the years killing them.

Written by Jon Clapham

Format: Ps3, Xbox 360, PC

Genre: Action, Horror, FPS

Going back-to-basics is not an advisable idea for a first-person shooter. Of all the genres of videogames, the FPS is the one that has to move forward with new ideas to avoid stagnation, and it is the lack of a fresh take that is the major problem with Aliens Vs Predator.

The entire experience feels like a step back to the shooters of the mid-to-late nineties and while the game doesn’t do anything majorly wrong, it doesn’t have anything that makes it stand out. A lack of new ideas is not always a hindrance as long as what the game does is done well. But even in this, AVP rarely rises above average.
