Industry leading MMO lost 100,000 active users in most recent quarter – 700,000 less than previous period.
Activation Blizzard reported a net loss of 100,000 World of Warcraft subscribers for the three months ending December 31st, according to financial documents filed by the company.
An aggressive marketing campaign featuring Chuck Norris during the quarterly period may have acquired enough new subscribers to negate further losses to its established user base.
Three months prior to the fourth calendar quarter, Activision Blizzard revealed that the longstanding MMO had lost 800,000 subscribers – seven per cent of its total user base at the time. That followed another exodus of about 300,000 customers in the first six months of 2011.
But Blizzard appears to have decelerated the reduction, ending the quarter with 10.2 million subscribers after seven years of business. (more…)

The biggest entertainment launch of all time.
That’s no mean feat. As has just been revealed by Activision, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5m copies in the UK and US alone in its first 24 hours on the market.
That means it sold 75 copies sold a second throughout its first day on retail shelves.
Factor in the limited hours of most retailers and that actually works out to around 200 copies per second. (more…)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, tons of information leaked and trailers released.
So, Modern Warfare 3 then…there’s been a fair bit of hype around the latest Call of Duty title, but all I can think is that Activision’s strategy to (presumably) make as much money as possible from the franchise by releasing a new game every year is going to eventually kill the series, much like the recent demise of Guitar Hero (or at least it’s hiatus).
By pushing for a new release every year, this really makes me wonder whether the quality of gameplay will be compromised. We all know Modern Warfare 2 was filled with glitches/hacked accounts and whatever other nonsense you can think of. So will we see better security and support with the latest title?
