Monday, March 12th, 2012

diablo-3-announcement1 Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 3 won’t launch with player versus player combat.

Lead designer Jay Wilson said in a post on Battle.net that the PvP Arena system will arrive in a post-release patch.

“As we’re counting down the days until we’re ready to announce a release date for Diablo III, we’ve come to realize that the PvP game and systems aren’t yet living up to our standards,” he said.

“Today, we wanted to let you know that we’ve made the difficult decision to hold back the PvP Arena system and release it in a patch following the game’s launch.” (more…)

Friday, February 24th, 2012

diablo-3-announcement1 Blizzard has moved to assure fans that Diablo 3 is in “great shape” following some ominous sentiments expressed by one of its own community managers.

Earlier this month, Micah ‘Bashiok’ Whiple, a community manager at Blizzard, expressed concerns that the game might not meet fan expectations, causing a bit of a stir among forumites.

“I too worry that we won’t be able to meet the expectations people have built up for themselves. Part of my job is managing people’s expectations, so… eh… stop it. Stop thinking about how awesome this game could be,” he said. (more…)

World of Warcraft Subscriber Losses Calm

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

deathwingelemental Industry leading MMO lost 100,000 active users in most recent quarter – 700,000 less than previous period.

Activation Blizzard reported a net loss of 100,000 World of Warcraft subscribers for the three months ending December 31st, according to financial documents filed by the company.

An aggressive marketing campaign featuring Chuck Norris during the quarterly period may have acquired enough new subscribers to negate further losses to its established user base.

Three months prior to the fourth calendar quarter, Activision Blizzard revealed that the longstanding MMO had lost 800,000 subscribers – seven per cent of its total user base at the time. That followed another exodus of about 300,000 customers in the first six months of 2011.

But Blizzard appears to have decelerated the reduction, ending the quarter with 10.2 million subscribers after seven years of business. (more…)

Diablo 3 February Release Date Reports Debunked by Blizzard

Monday, January 9th, 2012

diablo-3-announcement1 Blizzard’s community manager Micah Whiple, aka Bashiok, has said retailer listings suggesting Diablo 3 will be released next month aren’t official.

“Retailers will not know a date until it’s officially announced through a press release,” Whiple said on Twitter.

Over the weekend Best Buy and Gameplay listed the Diablo 3 release date as February 1, whipping up a bit of a fan frenzy.

Whiple went on to point out that the developer “can’t really keep every individual retail shop from making up a date” before reiterating the company hasn’t provided an official launch date for the eagerly anticipated dungeon crawler. “Any store or person claiming otherwise is guessing.” (more…)

Blizzard Affair with Consoles Still Possible for Diablo III

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

diablo-3-announcement1 It has been an on-again, off-again relationship for Blizzard and consoles over the past couple decades. With offerings on the N64 in StarCraft 64 and Warcraft II on the Saturn and PlayStation, Blizzard is once again working on a possible offering for the current generation with Diablo III.

As of right now, the highly anticipated game is definitely coming out for PC, but the developer maintains that they are hard at work on coming up with something specifically designed for consoles, not some shoddy port.

“There’s a key difference,” said Blizzard lead designer Jay Wilson to Game Informer. “Certainly, a lot of things get brought over, but a port is trying to take a PC game and graft it onto a console. Our goal is to make a game that feels like it’s natively made for a console. If we make it, we want it to feel like a Blizzard game and that we built it for that platform from the ground up.”

Diablo 3 Requires Constant Internet Connection

Monday, August 1st, 2011

diablo-3-announcement1 Blizzard has revealed that the long-awaited Diablo 3 will require players to be constantly connected to the internet, even after an initial authentication process has been completed.

Remember when you first heard stuff like how either Steam or StarCraft 2 require you to be online for authentication purposes? That the process to play or utilize either service offline can be a bit circuitous, but at least it’s still possible to be offline. But, Diablo 3 differs in that you must be online to play at all — not just for authentication.

Executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo notes that the wealth of improvements and features Diablo 3 brings to Battle.net necessitate the always-online requirement. Specific additions that he refers to include: (more…)
