New Xbox To Be 6x As Powerful As 360

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

xbox360logo The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN.

Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system’s GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD’s 7000 series Southern Islands GPU.

Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99. Monday, January 9th, 2012

In a feature looking ahead to 2012, GameSpot writes:

“There are strong signs suggesting that, like with Nintendo’s Wii U, a tablet component figures heavily into the new design. That saucy Windows 8 Metro interface (now also seen on the Xbox Dashboard) just begs to be touched.”

“Speculation as to the form it will take has been rife for the past few months, with some even suggesting that the core of the new platform will be akin to a tablet PC that wirelessly connects to a base station, which in turn plugs into your TV.” (more…)

PS4 Launch to Match Xbox720?

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

scee Sony has hinted that it intends to ensure that the next Xbox does not enjoy the same headstart in the market that the Xbox 360 had over the PS3.

And with Xbox 360 being heavily rumoured for either next year or 2013, that means the PS4 is likely far closer than we think.

And of course, Nintendo’s next new machine will be with us next year – though whether Sony considers that to be a true competitor is unclear.

“I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation],” European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan told Eurogamer.

However, keen to stick up for its current machine Ryan added: “There’s still a lot of unfinished business on PS3.” (more…)
