Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto ‘Retires’

miyamoto One of the most acclaimed developers of all time has announced his intention to ‘retire’ from his current role.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the head of Nintendo development and the creator of famous IPs such as Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, is stepping down from his role.

But the world’s Nintendo fans can breathe a sigh of relief – Miyamoto remains a Nintendo developer, though in future he intends to devote himself to smaller projects in a more hands-on role.

“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire’,” he told Wired. “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.” (more…)

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Upgrade System

gamescom-2011-hands-on-the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword-wii-2 Nintendo has released a new trailer giving a brief glimpse at the Upgrade system for the upcoming Zelda title, Skyward Sword.

Zelda games are renowned for being deep games but this new feature adds yet more depth. Whilst killing enemies or exploring through the wilderness, Link will come across artifacts and other handy items which he can store for his next visit to the bazaar.

Nintendo Announces Limited Edition Version of Zelda: Skyward Sword

gamescom-2011-hands-on-the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword-wii-2 The Legend of Zelda was first released on the Nintendo Entertainment System a quarter of a century ago this year, and to help celebrate this occasion Nintendo are releasing a limited edition pre-order bundle for the latest instalment in The Legend of Zelda franchise, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

2011 is the year of Zelda with Nintendo celebrating 25 years since the beginning of the critically-acclaimed franchise.

A limited edition bundle of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword features the game itself, the music CD featuring selected songs from The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony and a golden Wii Remote Plus controller bearing the Hylian Crest.

Mario 3DS Titles Renamed and Dated

03top Nintendo have confirmed new names and release dates for the 3DS’ two flagship Mario titles.

Traditional platformer Super Mario will now be known as Super Mario 3D Land and will land on UK shelves in November. The new title harks back to the original Super Mario Land series on Game Boy, the first title of which has been released on the 3DS eShop.

Meanwhile Mario Kart 3DS has become Mario Kart 7 and will be released in December. It is the first numbered entry in the long-running series. (more…)

E3: Nintendo Announce Wii Successor

wii-u-2-420-90 It’s finally here. Nintendo has revealed its next home console at its E3 press conference – The Wii U.

As widely reported, the machine uses an iPad sized touch-screen (6.2-inch) controller which in itself can clearly be used as a standalone unit – though Iwata has stressed that it is not a portable games device.

It will also work with all existing Wii games and Wii accessories and will even allow users to play their Wii titles without using a TV. Indeed, some games will require the use of peripherals like the Wii controller.

However, the system also offers tremendous scope for augmented reality gaming in conjunction with a user’s TV. The machine is HD compatible and will communicate wirelessly with TV sets. (more…)

Latest Rumour – Rockstar Working On Wii 2

nintendo-wii Rockstar is one of the many major publishers secretly working on Wii 2 titles, claims the latest rumour report from French site 01.net.

According to the site, which last week released supposed tech specs and further controller details for the new console, Nintendo’s specifically targeted Rockstar as part of its campaign to ‘win back’ the hardcore audience.

If true, the move could be a huge win for the platform holder, as – presuming rumours Wii 2 will be more powerful than PS3 and 360 are true – it could have the best looking version of GTA V on its console.

The French site previously released Sony’s NGP specs long before the official announcement.

Review – Kirby’s Epic Yarn

193749-yarn It seems like every month I start at least one of my reviews by pointing out how the gaming industry has gone back to its roots, putting me firmly in retro heaven.

This month is no different, with yet another classic seeing a modern day revamp. This time is the turn of everyone’s favourite hungry little pink beach ball, Kirby.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn starts in Dream Land, where, as usual, Kirby is on the hunt for something to eat. He stumbles upon an odd looking tomato and, just as he is about to eat it, a strange wizard made out wool appears and sucks him into a magic sock. Fo’real.

When he wakes up, Kirby find himself in a land made entirely out of cloth, buttons and all manner of other things you would expect find in a hobby craft store. What’s more, he appears to been turned into wool himself.

Step Aside Layton – The Doc Is In The House

doctor There’s a brand-new puzzler on the block, combining adventure and exploration on the revolutionary new 3DS Handheld.

Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. have released the first trailer and additional game play features for Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights, showing great similarity to the Professor Layton series, will it be enough to attract die-hard Layton fans to this new title?

There’s A Zombie On Your DS

plants-vs-zombies It’s taken a while for Plants Vs Zombies to finally arrive on the DS, it even made an appearance on the iPhone beforehand so I think I speak for everyone when I say; It’s about time!

The widely anticipated adaptation features multiplayer action, four exclusive mini-games and 14 new achievements.

GOTTA MIX ‘EM ALL! OC ReMix Presents Pokémon: The Missingno Tracks!

front-pixel FAIRFAX, VA-Fifteen years ago, a small company called GAME FREAK released a role-playing game called Pokémon for the Nintendo Game Boy.

In the years since, Pokémon has gone on to sell over 200 million copies and continues to be one of the most successful video game series of all time.

Fans around the world have spent countless hours training and battling their favorite monsters, and now we are on the threshold of a new adventure with Pokémon Black and White, the next installations of the popular franchise, due for Northern American release on the Nintendo DS on March 6th.

In honor of the epic legacy this franchise has created for itself, OverClocked ReMix has released today The Missingno Tracks, a fan-made tribute to the music of Pokémon. Director Gerry “The Damned” Wheatley and 24 musicians have worked together to create 28 unique arrangements of themes from across the many generations of the handheld series.
