Review – Donkey Kong Country Returns

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

donkey-kong-country-returns-wallpaper-logo It seems that in the last few year a strange wave of nostalgia has washed over the games industry. Classic franchises brought back to life, old school gameplay making a comeback and on a personal level I couldn’t be happier.

You see I’m now 28 and while that is not old it does mean that, having got my first proper console at age 8, I have been gaming for more than 20 years. It also means that the current nostalgic wave is a double hit for me as many of the games making a return are the games of my childhood.

Of the studios bring it all back I think its fair to say that Nintendo have been pretty much been leading the charge. Their latest game to see itself brought out of gaming oblivion is the classic Donkey Kong Country.

Donkey Kong Country Returns sees the series returning to its familiar 2D side-scrolling format seen in the first games of the series all the way back on the Super Nintendo. Like its SNES predecessors the game’s story is…well the same as always…someone has stolen all of DK’s bananas and he wants them back. (more…)

This month sees T1 dabble in the shady lie of crime, as 2K Games’ gangster sequel Mafia II dominates the front cover. Does the series’ next-gen debut outing deserve your respect? Or should it be cast aside and left sleeping with the fishes?
The heist and gun play fun doesn’t stop there either, with Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days bursting onto the scene in a bid to right the wrongs of the original. They’re actually looking pretty good for a couple of dead men..

And if that isn’t enough run-and-gun fun for you, the frenetic action continues with a special preview of Natural Selection 2, an epic upcoming FPS from Unknown Worlds Entertainment, as well as a review of MMO-shooter Global Agenda, which was recently released in the UK and has adopted the growingly popular free-to-play model. Guns, explosions, crimes and robots…it doesn’t get much better than this! (more…)

Thirteen1 July Issue Available Now!

The South African fun is over, and unless you’re lucky enough to be Spanish (or don’t care about football), you’ll undoubtedly be nursing some kind of World Cup hurt.. issue28

Luckily, as always, gaming is here to act as a shining light in the darkest of times, and the 100% free-to-read July issue of Thirteen1 magazine is now available, covering all of the month’s top gaming releases.
There really is little reason to be down with all of this finger-bashing fun to be had.

The much anticipated Crackdown 2 has finally jumped onto the scene, and right onto the front cover of Thirteen1, probably leaping over a massive skyscraper while firing a rocket launcher in mid-air to get there. Does it live up to expectations? Check out T1’s extensive review of all things super-powered to find out.

EA have fittingly released FIFA Online just in time for everyone to right their personal international wrongs, so T1 has jumped straight in there to cover it with a beta hands-on. Will it prove as popular as it’s console counterpart?

The DrunkenGamer has had a great time flying around Cataclysm, the latest mind-blowing expansion for Blizzard’s World of WarCraft, and wishes you was there so much that he’s put together a brand new feature, Wish You Were Here, showing you all of the best areas before it’s released.

Thirteen1 June Issue Out Now!

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

The 100% free-to-read June issue of Thirteen1 gaming magazine is now available, sporting a brand new design and packed with top gaming features!

issue27 T1’s slick, new-look, which is now fully social-media integrated, boasts more interactive screenshots and videos than you can shake a stick at.

Even the DrunkenGamer has had a facelift, not that it’s prevented him from jumping around the world of games with a Guinness in one hand, pad in the other. This month sees him finally review Frogster’s latest Runes of Magic content, The Elder Kingdoms, as well as get the opportunity to go hands-on with single-player campaign for Blizzard’s hugely anticipated StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty.

Of course, it just wouldn’t be the DrunkenGamer if there wasn’t any destruction, so he got behind the wheel of Disney’s explosive arcade-racer, Split/Second, and caused yet more mayhem in his very own version of Mafia MMO, Omerta.

Everyone is understandably going World Cup crazy at the moment – and who can blame them! Thirteen1 have well and truly caught the fever this year, with a World Cup special covering both EA’s 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, and Ubisoft’s Pure Football. Definitely one to check out if you’re still having trouble deciding on the perfect football game for your post-match parties.
