Review – Sonic Jump

Monday, November 26th, 2012

sj_0000 Sonic is on the up! Sonic Jump successfully takes everything we love about the horizontal, side-scrolling blue hedgehog and makes it vertical. What results is a game that reaches for the skies, both literally in its gameplay and in its faithful authenticity to the source material.

In a strange twist for Sega’s fleet-footed spiky mascot, Sonic Jump’s mould is basically a clone of Doodle Jump. Sonic jumps and bounces on platforms while you tilt your phone left/right to control him mid-air – none of his usual horizontal speed madness included. But while it is very Doodle Jump, there is easily enough Sonic DNA here for Sonic Jump to stand on its own two feet; it’s certainly not a clone, and for that reason it deserves your attention.

From the the old faithful ring based health system (and a charming ‘briing’ that sounds whenever you collect a ring,) to clever level design that you always feel you can complete faster and with better results with one more try – Sonic Jump still feels like a true Sonic game. As usual with Sonic, the story mode is split into zones broken down into smaller Acts. These take about a minute to complete, with boss battles against Dr. Robotnik awaiting you after you complete the 11 acts of each zone.

Review – Football Manager 2013

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

fm2013-logo Football Manager 2013 is upon us, and despite its delayed arrival to the season, is once again set to make an immediate impact on the lives of football gaming fans everywhere.

While the main game mode is yet another iteration of tinkering and tweaking the already excellent framework, avid fans keeping an eye on the weekly video blogs will be well aware of the major new feature in FM2013 – Classic Mode. This is a stripped down version of the full game, designed to offer a less time consuming and technical experience for those who don’t relish the opportunity of managing every detail of running a football club.

The Classic Mode is primarily made simpler by handing a lot of the details to backroom staff, as well as handy features such as “match result only” options, allowing you to bypass any dull fixtures. While the Classic Mode is not a complete return to the heyday of ChampMan 00/01, it is certainly closer to it than the fuller version of FM2013. While the normal mode may take you a week to complete a season, Classic Mode’s simplicity and speed allow you to pile through a season in a day’s play.

Football Manager 2013

Friday, September 7th, 2012

fm2013-logo Football Manager 2013 is not just bigger, better and more realistic than ever… it also includes, for the first time, new ways to enjoy the world’s favourite football management simulation.

In addition to offering an array of improvements and enhancements over its predecessors, the new release also incorporates a series of radical changes and new game modes which, for some, will revolutionise the way the game is played.

Perhaps the most noteworthy of these is the introduction of the all-new Classic mode… or ‘FMC’ as it’s become known within Sports Interactive. FMC offers, for the first time in Football Manager’s long history, an alternative, less time-consuming way for players to approach the game. The new mode simplifies the way players manage their club and allows them to focus on the nuts and bolts of taking their team to the top.

“The introduction of FMC is a major step forward in Football Manager’s evolution,” says Sports Interactive’s Studio Director Miles Jacobson. “In recent years it’s become clear that there’s a large group of people who would like to play Football Manager, but simply can’t devote the time required to get the most out of the game. We decided, therefore, to try to find a way to accommodate players with limited free time, without significantly diluting the experience. We believe that FMC achieves this beautifully.”

“I would, however, like to stress to our many, many fans around the world that the introduction of FMC will not impact in any way on the game that they’ve come to know and love. For those who still want the full, ‘hands-on’ experience, Football Manager 2013 offers exactly what they’re looking for – a bigger, better and even more immersive version of the world’s greatest football management simulation.”

Astute readers may remember when T1 reported on the first a little while ago. Well, here comes the second, entitled “Marines vs. Xenos”.

Through a series of clips and hilariously overdone developer introductions the team guide viewers through the Aliens – their life and role and power – as well as some of the arsenal that Marines will be able to bring to the field.

Passion for the project seems to remain very high at Gearbox, and CEO Randy Pitchford urges all viewers that “They’re not going to want to miss this one”
