Valve Dismisses Steam Box Rumours

steam-logo-300x224 But marketing director Doug Lombardi won’t rule out Valve hardware in the future.

Valve’s marketing director Doug Lombardi has squashed reports that Valve is developing a PC-console hybrid, Kotaku reports.

The “Steam Box” rumours began with an article on The Verge, which described an open platform in the vein of Google’s Android with Steam as its core UI.

The article indicated that the actual hardware would be made by various partners, but Valve had constructed a sample spec similar to the Alienware X51 as a yardstick for developers. (more…)

Steam-Bought EA Games Auto-Added to Origin

ea-origin It has emerged that EA’s PC download service Origin is auto-adding EA titles to gamer’s user lists that were purchased from a rival network.

Specifically, Steam.

Joystiq reports that users have noticed that games such as Dead Space 2 and Mass Effect 2 are automatically appearing on their Origin accounts even though they were purchased on Steam. (more…)

Valve Admits Extent of Steam Hack

steam-logo-300x224 Steam hackers may have encrypted credit card data but no evidence data has been compromised, Gabe Newell advises caution.

Valve’s Gabe Newell sent out a notification today warning patrons of the company’s digital digtribution service Steam that hackers may have obtained a copy of a file containing payment transaction details dated 2004-2008.

“This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords,” said Newell.

“We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it’s a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.” (more…)

Steam Mobile App For The Masses

Valve has opened up its new Steam app to the public after completing the beta testing period launched last Thursday.

Steam customers can now access their accounts through iOS and Android, enabling them to browse game catalogues, interact with friends and keep up to date on new items to hit the store.

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell said that app was released so the company could help meet customer demands and make the platform more accessible for users. (more…)
