T1′s Weekly Video Game Highlights

Friday, May 10th, 2013

screenshot_301333 The usual mid-year AAA release slump is upon us, leaving many gamers staring at their current crop of titles while patiently waiting for Q3/Q4 to roll in. It’s a typically quiet time, but don’t mistake that as meaning the games industry is going into hibernation. Especially not this year. The next-gen is just around the corner, and news on upcoming releases is leaking faster than a BP oil rig in a submarine battle.

So let’s begin with the major announcement that kicked off this frantic news week – EA and Disney. The two powerhouse companies have joined forces for Disney’s Star Wars gaming push, meaning EA will pick up where the now all-but dead LucasArts left off. Disney may not be in everybody’s good books at the moment, what with the millions of Star Wars movies they plan to release and the closure of LucasArts; and EA are hardly the most loved company in the games industry either; but the thought of EA’s money and tech being piled into Star Wars games can’t be all bad news. Right?

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Gets its First Dev Diary

Friday, May 10th, 2013

ac4bf_sc_sp_01_iiconicpose_edward-jpg Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be the first game in the popular franchise to be released on the next generation PS4.

In the video below, the developers talk about the challenges they faced while trying to add additional detail to the games on the PS3, whereas the power of the PS4 allowed them to create an environment as beautiful as they intended. Black Flag also introduces a new dimension of social connection to the AC franchise, with the addition of Companion Gaming.

The game will merge ground gameplay and naval gameplay, allowing the hero to travel from land to ship, ship to ship and ship to land with no transitional screens. This will mean players can begin a mission on one island, board a boat, take over another boat and finish he mission on a new island entirely.

Assassin’s Creed Creator Fired by Ubisoft -His Second Time Leaving the Company!

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

gaming_ac3logo This is an interesting one, and just goes to show how cruel the world of video games can be. Do you know how it feels to leave one company to join another, only for that second company to be declared bankrupt, get purchased by your first company, and then be told you’re fired from the company you originally left? Right now, Assassin’s Creed creator Patrick Desilets knows exactly what that feels like.

Back in 2010, Patrice Desilets parted ways with Ubisoft to lead THQ’s Montreal studio, where he was to be in charge of creating a new IP (codenamed 1666). Unfortunately for Desilet and the gaming world as a whole, THQ’s earnings took a significant nose dive over the last couple of years, resulting in the ambitious publisher/developer going out business earlier this year.

As part of the auction process for THQ’s assets, Ubisoft made a winning bid of $2.5m for the Montreal studio. They also snatched up the South Park license for $3.5m, making them the new owners of the license for the anticipated South Park: The Stick of Truth.

Swallowing THQ Montreal meant Patrice Desilet was reunited with Ubisoft, who said they were “very pleased” to be working with him again when they made the acquisition back in March this year. But things have taken a turn for the worse now, with Desilet reportedly fired from Ubisoft and escorted from the building yesterday.

Meet Silas Greaves, the Man Behind the Hands of Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

0030412 Ubisoft has continued building the hype for promising downloadable Wild West shooter, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.

Now, gamers can get to know main character Silas Greaves through a traditional Wild West ballad, which just so happens to be playing over an all-new action packed gameplay trailer.

The accompanying text follows:

“The Wild West was a place and time outside the normal course of civilized justice, where
anyone who was a good shot could become a hero or a villain. But it wasn’t only the
gunslingers themselves who decided who would become legends and who would be
forgotten by history. It was the men behind the pianos, and the fellas toting guitars. If a
man’s story became a popular song, then the myth was born.”

“Writing songs back then was not so much a talent as a craft. You had to get the details
right enough so the story would sound believable, still making sure that the rhymes
would work. Even if the lyrics would largely be biographical, you could take a little liberty
with the truth to make the lyrics more spectacular and poetic.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is Real and Looking Rather Awesome

Monday, April 8th, 2013

far-cry-3 Last week’s surprising revelation that TellTale’s Poker Night 2 wasn’t just an April Fools joke was great (who puts a ‘genuine’ big game press release out on April 1st anyway!?), but this one might be even better.

Rumours of a retro VHS-era inspired Far Cry 3 expansion named “Blood Dragon” also started swirling on Aprils Fool day; rumours that we completely dismissed due to their suspicious date. Turns out, this one is real too, and it’s looking rather awesome.

Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has today been confirmed with a listing on Xbox.com – and not as an expansion to the winner of T1′s Game of the Year 2012 either, but as a standalone game for everybody to download whether they already own Far Cry 3 or not. The game is expected to land on XBLA, PSN, and PC on May 1st.

Ubisoft Breaks Own Embargo and Announces Assassin’s Creed IV

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

AC4BF_PS3_4PACKSHOTS_FINAL.indd Well shiver me timbers! Those leaks didn’t last long because Ubisoft has just broken their own embargo and confirmed that in fact Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is actually a brand new upcoming title.

The title was shown off to the press yesterday but some details are still being kept a secret until next week. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be released for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC.

Only Ubisoft know whether it’s going to be released on next-gen or not but we do know that the PS3 will get 60 minutes of exclusive gameplay, thanks to the recent packshot of the PS3 version.

So it seems everything we covered yesterday was indeed true, maybe even the details regarding the protagonist.

Examiner has named the new hooded protagonist as Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin’s Creed 3. Edward is known as a Privateer, Assassin and occasional pirate with the game location being set in the Caribbean on multiple islands including Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas.

Assassin’s Creed IV In Development, Due 2014

Friday, February 8th, 2013

assassins-creed-logo A new hero, a new time-period, a new development team and an early 2014 release date – Ubisoft last night revealed that work on Assassin’s Creed IV (and maybe more) is already well under way.

These details were all confirmed last night by Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, before saying that AC IV will mark “another major leap forward for the franchise”.

Assassin’s Creed is a major IP for Ubisoft and it sounds like it is being treated as such. Guillemot stated that multiple teams are working on their own chapters of the AC universe, with each “getting several years to make their version of an Assassin’s Creed game”.

The ‘team’ working on Assassin’s Creed IV is still yet to be confirmed, as are details on when the new time-period will be set, and on what generation machines the game will be made available. Judging by Guillemot’s admission that each team gets “several years” to make their version of the game, we’re guessing it was originally being developed with current-gen consoles in mind. We think you’d be safe to expect a cross-generation release that covers both the current and next-gen consoles.
